Cashback is not a discount applied at checkout. It is a delayed reward, tracked after the fact, and it can still fail to pay out even after a purchase goes through.
How tracking actually works
When you click through a cashback link, a tracking parameter is attached to your session. The retailer’s system records the referring cashback provider, and that record is what the payout is eventually based on — not the cashback app itself confirming your purchase in real time.
Why cashback is credited weeks later, not immediately
Retailers report confirmed sales in batches, and most cashback terms build in a return-window buffer before crediting anything, specifically so refunded or cancelled orders do not get paid out by mistake.
Common reasons a cashback claim is rejected
- Ad blockers or privacy extensions can strip the tracking parameter before it reaches the retailer.
- Using a different device or browser between clicking the link and completing checkout can break the tracking session.
- Applying an unrelated coupon code at checkout sometimes overrides the cashback tracking, depending on the retailer.
- Buying an excluded category. Gift cards and certain sale items are commonly excluded even when the rest of the site qualifies.
What to do if cashback does not show up
Most providers have a “missing cashback” claim form and a stated response window (commonly 30–90 days). File the claim with your order confirmation attached rather than assuming it will resolve on its own.
